In order to lower noise levels in the office, management sometimes installs workstation partitions in the belief that this will be a solution to contain and isolate their workers from unwanted background noise that is highly disruptive to a worker’s daily activities.

Workstation partitions do not solve the problem of noise in an office environment. The reason why they do not work is the soft sound absorbing that is used to make them is usually less than 5mm in thickness. In order for workstation partitions to work they would have to be made of sound absorbing material that is 40mm in thickness or greater.
